State Senator Seeks to Regulate Baby Bottles

July 6, 2010

In the midst of a budget crisis, the California State Assembly passed the Toxin-Free Toddlers and Babies Act- SB 797.

State Senator Fran Pavely (D-Agoura Hills) wrote that bill that bans the polycarbonate chemical bixphenol A from any product used by children under the age of three such as bottles, sippy cups, and food containers.

Pavely believes the chemical component is harmful when swallowed.

Members of the chemical industry insist that scientists and consumer advocates are exaggerating the effects of the material, which acts to harden plastic.

The chemical is currently found in 93 percent of all Americans, including 90 percent of newborns.
