Planning Commission Okays Removal of Oak Trees

May 10, 2010

The Calabasas Planning Commission voted unanimously late last week to remove nine oak trees from a vacant lot on Hummingbird Way.

Sergio Rosenberg, who owns the parcel at 22951 Hummingbird Way, initiated plans to build a single-family residence on the lot about five years ago, originally planning to remove about 14 trees. But Rosenberg’s plans stalled because Calabasas’s municipal code prevents the removal of three or more heritage oak trees without the approval of the city’s Planning Commission.

The city arborist consulted with Rosenberg, who presented a proposal at April’s Planning Commission meeting that said the removal of 11 trees was ideal appropriate. Further analysis from the arborist indicated moving the retaining wall on the property one additional foot could save two more trees.

Rosenberg agreed to plant replacement oak trees off site at least 56 inches apart. He plans to build a home of almost 3500 square feet on the 7880-square foot lot. The Calabasas City Council will have to give final approval.
