Las Virgenes Road Closure Delays Thousands

November 17, 2009—

An accident on Las Virgenes Road yesterday took out a major power line pole, according to Sgt. Tony Arnold of the Lost Hills Sheriff Station.

“In addition to hot power lines, communication and fiber optic wires were also on the road,” Arnold said. “These could be destroyed if they were run over. The power has been restored, but they are still working on the fiber optics. We anticipate the road to be open between 12-1pm this afternoon.”

Traffic was jammed down Las Virgenes / Malibu Canyon Road nearly to Pepperdine in Malibu. Thousands of frustrated motorists were turned away from commute home, blocked from going southbound on Las Virgenes Road by Sheriff’s deputies, then many were blocked again from going northbound, as directed, up Las Virgenes to the freeway.

When asked for advice on getting around the roadblock, one officer responded, “I don’t care how you’re going to get home.”
