Commission Joins Neighbors Against Public Pool at Park

June 16, 2010

The Calabasas Parks, Recreation, and Education Commission voted 5-0 to recommend against building a swimming pool at Juan Batista De Anza Park on the west side of town.

More than thirty residents spoke against construction at the Monday night meeting. Some claimed that the increased traffic would degrade the quality of life in adjoining neighborhoods and reduce the availability of curbside residential parking.  Others argued park expansion and increased car traffic would may result in oil and other chemicals polluting Las Virgenes Creek.

Proponents argue that Calabasas has outgrown its only community pool at the Tennis and Swim Center.

Alternative ideas included sharing the Las Virgenes Unified School District aquatics facilities or building a new pool in an abandoned property.

The recommendation now moves to the Calabasas City Council which will make the final decision about whether to proceed with construction.
