Chase Begins in Calabasas, Ends in Death

September 27, 2009—CALABASAS

When the CHP tried to stop Hector Vidal on the southbound 101 at Parkway Calabasas, he started a high-speed chase which ended in the death of an innocent pedestrian in Woodland Hills.

From the 101, Vidal excited the freeway at Topanga Canyond Blv. and then headed east on Ventura Blvd, with the CHP following. He then made a U-turn with his 2002 Cadillac and drove westbound, hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk at Don Pio Drive, which is just east of Topanga Canyon.

The pedestrian died and authorities have not yet released information or a name.

A LAPD official said that Vidal, 26, continued west on Ventura Bl. until his car rear-ended an SUV with four occupants. He refused to get out of his vehicle, prompting a standoff with police, during which an officer fired one shot, but did not hit Vidal.

Authorities did not say whether Vidal was armed. He is now being held on $1 million bail and will likely be charged with murder.

Two other people were taken to local hospitals, but authorities haven’t released details on them.

If you have any information, please call the LAPD at 877-LAPD 247 (527-3247).
